Celebración de Excelencia and ALASS Workshop to Focus on Latino College Success
Excelencia in Education invites interested individuals to join institutional, political, business, nonprofit, and community leaders for the annual Celebración de Excelencia to recognize America’s top programs for increasing Latino college success October 1 at the US Capitol Visitor Center in Washington, DC.

ACT Chief Executive Officer Jon Whitmore is scheduled to speak at this year’s event, which is the annual culmination of Excelencia in Education’s signature program, Examples of Excelencia. This is the nation’s only data-driven initiative to recognize programs with evidence of effectiveness in accelerating Latino student success at the associate, baccalaureate, and graduate levels.
Excelencia in Education’s success in helping Latino students is due to a combination of its research and the ability to bring together diverse stakeholders toward a common goal. For example, Excelencia in Education’s national initiative, Ensuring America’s Future by Increasing Latino College Completion, brings together 65 national partners, including ACT, to focus on Latino student success.
Each year hundreds of educators, business leaders, and concerned citizens respond to the call for nominations. A committee of experts from diverse national organizations selects the top programs as the year’s Examples of Excelencia. Representatives are flown to the nation’s capital to receive recognition at the Celebración de Excelencia, a financial award of $5,000, and inclusion in the compendium of What Works for Latino Students in Higher Education.
On October 2, college and university professionals and supporters will participate in Excelencia in Education’s Achieving LAtino Student Success (or ALASS, pronounced as the Spanish word for “wings”) workshop to collaborate on institutional practices, policies, and leadership efforts to accelerate Latino student success. This year’s ALASS Workshop will include a featured session titled “Moving Through the Ranks Serving Latino Student Success.” The presidents of the University of Texas at El Paso, El Paso Community College, CUNY—Lehman College, and CUNY Hostos Community College will consider the challenges, opportunities, and benefits of serving Latino student success.
