Publications Address Needs of
First-Generation Students

Cover of Family Firsts booklet When students are the first in their families to think about college, they face significant challenges. If they start planning early and create a support system, they can improve their chances of being admitted.

ACT is committed to providing information for life’s transitions. First-generation college students—and their families—have a great need for information. They might not even know what they need to know. Two new booklets published by ACT can help.

The Family Firsts booklet for students targets seventh through ninth graders. Research shows that the most effective outreach to first-generation students happens in middle school. Family Firsts includes information on preparing academically for college, developing career plans, creating a support system, learning about financial aid, and choosing and applying to a postsecondary program.

A companion brochure, for parents of first-generation students, addresses common questions and concerns, how to choose a college, and the financial aid process.

Copies of the Family Firsts publications are available to download, or call 319/337-1031 to order printed copies.
