For Tech-Savvy Students, ACT Online Prep Closes the Book on Test PreparationWith instant messaging, iPods, blogs, and streaming video, many of todays high school students are all about technology. The new ACT Online Prep makes them very happy. I like the Online Prep program because I can learn strategies for taking the ACT test, learn the format of the test, and do practice questions without carrying around a 10-pound book in my backpack, said Anthony Riesch, a student at Sacred Heart Preparatory High School in Atherton, California. I think my standardized-test-taking skills have improved, too. I took two practice tests after using Online Prep and the time I needed to complete them had decreased dramatically. This gives me time to check my answers, which has helped my average score. Because the ACT is a curriculum-based test, the best preparation for it is working hard in challenging classes in high school. But many students want additional practice. For them, ACT has developed Online Prep. The program focuses on familiarizing students with what they will experience on test day. It allows them to prepare for the test at their convenience, anywhere they have Internet access. It offers practice tests and essays, comprehensive content review for each of the four subject areas the ACT coversEnglish, math, reading, and scienceplus diagnostic tests and personalized study paths. ACT Online Prep also includes a practice prompt for the optional ACT Writing Test. Students can write an essay under timed or untimed conditions, then submit it for real-time scoring. They will receive a score in seconds. Two versions of Online Prep are available. The Personal Edition, intended for individual student purchase, is priced at $19.95. The School Version, designed for high schools, school districts, and states that want to make the program available to all students, is offered at rates significantly lower than those for most comparable test prep tools. A 50 percent discount is available to schools where at least half the students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunches. Chicago Public Schools has purchased Online Prep for all 110 of its high schools. Previous Article « Autumn 2006 Index | Top of Page » Next Article
