ACT English Language Program Prepares International Students at Canadian University

Students walk to class on the Dalhousie University campus in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Thanks to ACT’s new English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program, international students at a Canadian university are gaining the language skills they need to be successful in their academic studies.

The EAP program is intended for international students who meet an institution’s undergraduate or graduate academic admission requirements, but not the English language proficiency requirements. Institutions that accept students who have successfully completed the EAP program can be confident that these students have the skills and language necessary for a smooth transition into their studies.

The College for Continuing Education at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, offers the EAP program to students who have been conditionally accepted into Dalhousie, but do not meet the university’s English language requirements. The 17-week course helps students strengthen their academic and communication skills and is available to those preparing for undergraduate and graduate study at Dalhousie.

Of the six students in the first EAP course, two have been admitted into undergraduate programs and three into graduate programs. A second class is now in progress.

“Introducing ACT’s English for Academic Purposes program has been an exciting new development for the College for Continuing Education. We are very pleased with the results so far,” said Mary Meidell, program director.
