Photo of Louis W. SullivanLouis W. Sullivan became president emeritus of the Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) in 1993 after serving as secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services for 47 months in the George H. Bush administration.

In 1975, Sullivan became the founding dean and director of the Medical Education Program at Morehouse College, the first minority medical school founded in the United States in the twentieth century.

Started as a two-year program in basic medical sciences in 1978, the Morehouse School of Medicine became independent from Morehouse College in 1981, with Sullivan as its dean and first president. In 1983, MSM became a member of the Atlanta University Center.

Graduating magna cum laude from Morehouse College in 1954, Sullivan earned his medical degree, cum laude, from Boston University School of Medicine in 1958. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, and has received 49 honorary degrees.
