COMPASS placement measures are designed to assist the institution in placing students into appropriate "standard" level courses or into developmental or preparation courses, as appropriate.
The three measures produce up to seven possible placement scores (one each in Writing Skills and Reading and up to five in Mathematics):

- College Algebra
- Geometry
- Trigonometry
- Reading Placement Measure
- Writing Skills Placement Measure
(Usage/Mechanics and Rhetorical Skills)
The measures may be used individually or in different combinations.
