LOCKSMITHS install, modify, and repair locks, deadbolts, and other locking devices to provide special security needs. Locks are used to keep homes, businesses, vehicles, and other property safe. Locksmiths repair and open locks and safes. They change lock cylinders and combinations and repair broken doorknobs and handles. They remove broken keys, repair jammed locks, cut new or duplicate keys and maintain key and combination records. Locksmiths may specialize in residential security service, cars, burglar alarms and electronics, and safes.

Entry Requirements

LOCKSMITHS generally receive training on the job. Additional technical training is given by most local and regional locksmith associations. Locksmiths must have a license and be bonded in some cities and states. To obtain a license, locksmiths must have their fingerprints taken and pay a fee. The Associated Locksmiths of America recognizes professionalism and proficiency among locksmiths by offering several registered and professional designations.
