TEACHERS (ART, MUSIC, DRAMA, SPEECH) plan, evaluate, and assign lessons, and prepare, administer, and grade tests. They prepare report cards, and meet with parents and to discuss progress of students. Art teachers help students develop knowledge, skills, and understanding of art. Drama teachers work with students in acting techniques and principles. Music teachers, through instruction and practice, help students reach a greater level of exposure to music, both instrumental and vocal. Speech teachers instruct students in speech-related areas, such as interpersonal communications, public speaking, group discussion, and debate.

Entry Requirements

TEACHERS (ART, MUSIC, DRAMA, SPEECH) must be certified to teach in the public school system. Licensure is not required for teachers in private schools. Usually licensure is granted by the State Board of Education or a licensure advisory committee. Applicants must have a bachelor's degree from a school with an approved teaching program plus a period of student teaching. Most states require secondary school teachers to obtain advanced study or a master's degree within a certain period of time after certification.
