Excellent Schools

Expansion Magazine has ranked the Iowa City Community School District the Number 4 public school district in the nation.

Some basic facts:

  • Among all United States high schools, Iowa City ranks among the highest in percentages of graduates, college-going students, and National Merit Scholars.
  • The Iowa City Community School District serves about 11,000 students from kindergarten through grade twelve.
  • There are several preschools, eighteen elementary schools (most with before-school and after-school programs), three junior high schools, two senior high schools, and an alternative high school.
  • We also have several high-quality parochial and private schools in the area.
  • All of our educators work diligently to meet the needs of every child, including those who have developmental disabilities and those who are particularly gifted or talented.
  • The average regular education class size is 24 students.
  • Test scores exceed national averages—the 2007 average ACT score for Iowa City high school graduates was 24.8, compared to the national average of 21.2.
  • We have nationally recognized mathematics and debate teams, school newspapers, and vocal music and instrumental music programs, as well as state championship athletic teams.
