To make good career decisions, evaluate your interests, abilities, and values.
Consider:
- What do you think about yourself?
- What can help you to achieve your goals, and what obstacles could get in your way?
- What types of work and school activities appeal to you? What interests you?
- What do you do well now, and what skills have you gained through experience?
- What values do you have regarding work?
Things your child can do:
- Talk to someone you trust (for instance, your school counselor or parents) about what you think are your strengths and weaknesses.
- Think about those things you are motivated by and those you want to do or accomplish.
- Assess your interests, abilities, and values using ACT's DISCOVER.
- Spend time with people whose activities interest you.
- Take courses in school that appeal to your interests and will help develop your abilities.
- Develop skills. ACT's WorkKeys is a way to measure the level of skills you've got and offers ways to improve them.
