- Patterson students prove they're prepared
- In response to the criticism that an unprepared workforce in Patterson was driving away potential employers, Patterson High School is launching a series of initiatives to better prepare students for college or jobs after graduation, including opening a career center, bringing employers to campus and administering a work skills test. Of the school's 336 seniors, 311 volunteered to take the WorkKeys test in September and October. The three-part test, created by the developers of the ACT and used in communities throughout the nation, measures basic workplace skills in reading for information, mathematics and locating information.

- Workforce development gets a new face in Paola
- KansasWorks, a division of the Kansas Department of Commerce, is filling the gap that was created when the Paola Workforce Center closed earlier this year. KansasWorks is a division of the Kansas Department of Commerce. Program specialist Angela Wiley visits Miami County twice a month to work with businesses and to let people know that the workforce services are still available and are expanding. Next year, KansasWorks will offer WorkKeys testing, which evaluates work readiness, Wiley said. It would be another thing that, like a high school diploma or GED, would help employers evaluate prospective employees and set standards for employment.

- Dow leader in state for readiness program
- Local companies are using a nationally recognized career readiness program to ensure a qualified workforce will meet the chemical manufacturing industry's upcoming needs. The value placed on skills to adapt to new technologies is apparent at The Dow Chemical Co.'s Michigan Operations site, where more than 600 of 800 qualifying employees have earned the highest possible rankings while earning National Career Readiness Certificates. The certificates are part of the ACT WorkKeys job skills assessment system, which offers portability around the country for workers who earn the rankings.
