Work Tasks

Most TRAVEL CLERKS are employed by membership organizations, such as automobile clubs. These workers, sometimes called member services counselors or travel counselors, plan trips, calculate mileage, and offer travel suggestions for club members. Using a road map, travel clerks highlight the best route from the starting point to the destination. They also may prepare an itinerary that indicates the points of interest, restaurants, overnight accommodations, and availability of emergency services. Travel clerks make rental car, hotel, or restaurant reservations for club members. Travel clerks must be knowledgeable about their companies' policies and about industry procedures.

Entry Requirements

Most employers prefer applicants for TRAVEL CLERK positions to have a high school diploma or its equivalent. However, good interpersonal skills and familiarity or experience with computers often are more important to employers. New employees learn job tasks through on-the-job training under the supervision of a supervisor or more experienced clerk. No special licensing or certification is required for travel clerks.
