Work Tasks

• Cut, trim, shampoo, and style hair, beards, and moustaches
• Color, straighten, and perm hair
• Keep money records and hire workers
• Keep up with the latest styles and hair treatments
• Work in barber shops, hair salons, hotels, stores, hospitals, etc.
• Work with scissors, clippers, razors, combs, brushes, towels, hair dryers, cleaners, lotions, etc.

• $35,500 average per year ($17.00 per hour)

Education/Training

• Minimum for Entry: A high school diploma and completion of an apprenticeship in barbering
• Employers Prefer: Completion of barber training at a vocational or barbering school
• Skills/Courses: Courses include haircutting, shaving, facial massaging, hair and scalp treatments, and practical work on customers.
• Certification/Licensing: All states require barbers to be licensed.
