Work Tasks

• Try to get people to pay their bills
• Get in touch with the person who owes money by phone or mail
• Find out why they have not paid the bill
• Make plans for them to pay back the money
• Work for banks, stores, collection agencies, and for the government
• Use computers, phones, and records of accounts

• $35,000 average per year ($16.75 per hour)

Education/Training

• Minimum for Entry: A high school diploma and sales experience plus on-the-job training
• Employers Prefer: A 2-year degree in business administration
• Skills/Courses: Training includes how the company works, good telephone skills, how to convince people to pay their bills, and the laws about debt collection.
• Certification/Licensing: Certification in state and federal laws is needed for promotion.
