Work Tasks
- Make and fix tanks which hold gases and liquids
- Read blueprints and make marks on metal plates to be cut, shaped, and welded together
- Put equipment on the tanks to stop air pollution
- Make sure boilers are safe and working right
- Work indoors or outdoors for construction companies, iron and steel companies, railroads, chemical plants, and power plants
- Work with boilers, vats, tanks, blueprints, grinders, torches, welding machines, gauges and scales, jacks, and safety equipment

- $51,500 average per year ($24.75 per hour)

- Expected to grow moderately (1.9% per year)
Education/Training
- Minimum for Entry: On-the-job training
- Employers Prefer: A high school diploma and an apprenticeship in boiler making
- Skills/Courses: Courses in math, blueprint reading, machine metalworking, shop, setting up and assembling rigging, welding of all types, blueprint reading, and layout
- Certification/Licensing: Union membership is often required.
