Work Tasks

• Build walls, houses, fireplaces, and other things with brick, concrete block, and stones
• Read blueprints and decide where things go
• Mix mortar to hold bricks together
• Spread mortar and put bricks in by hand to make sure they look neat and even
• Work outside at construction sites
• Use blueprints, chisels, hammers, mortar, masonry saws, stones and brick, rulers, levels, and other hand tools

• $47,500 average per year ($22.75 per hour)
• A medium occupation (82,500 workers in 2010)
• Expected to grow moderately (1.1% per year)

Education/Training

• Minimum for Entry: On-the-job training
• Employers Prefer: A high school diploma, 17 years of age or older, and an apprenticeship in masonry
• Skills/Courses: courses in applied math, mechanical drawing, and shop
• Certification/Licensing: Certification is available.
