Work Tasks
- Make sure that buildings being constructed are safe and follow fire rules, building laws, and zoning laws
- Go to worksites before building begins to make sure the foundations are good
- Make sure plans for buildings are correct and follow codes
- Keep records and reports of building progress
- Work for the government and for construction companies
- Use testing equipment, tape measures, government forms, wiring and plumbing equipment, building materials, blueprints, and code books

Education/Training
- Minimum for Entry: Work experience in construction as a manager, supervisor, or skilled worker
- Employers Prefer: A 2-year degree in architecture, civil engineering, or construction engineering
- Skills/Courses: College courses include construction technology, drafting, math, and building inspection. Must be up-to-date on building codes.
- Certification/Licensing: Certification is required. Must pass tests on building codes, construction techniques, and materials.
