Work Tasks
- Measure, map, and chart the earth's surface
- Make maps and charts from surveys, pictures taken from airplanes, and data from satellites
- Use math to make the scale and details on the map
- Fix maps that are incorrect
- Work in offices for the government, engineering, mapping, and surveying firms
- Use computers, maps, charts, drawings, drafting instruments, map-making tools, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Education/Training
- Minimum for Entry: A 2-year degree and experience as a cartographic technician or a 4-year degree in engineering, forestry, geography, geology, drafting, or physical science
- Employers Prefer: A 4-year degree in cartography
- Skills/Courses: Training in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS)
- Certification/Licensing: Certification is available.
