Work Tasks

• Work cash registers in stores and restaurants
• Total bills, take money from customers, and give back change and receipts
• Count the money in their drawer at the beginning and end of work day
• May answer phones and take reservations
• Work indoors behind counters in stores, gas stations, restaurants, hotels, and theaters
• Work with cash registers, money, charge forms, receipts, and coupons

Education/Training

• Minimum for Entry: A high school diploma and on-the-job training

• Skills/Courses: In small businesses, an experienced worker often trains beginners. In larger businesses, before being placed at cash registers, trainees spend several days in classes.
