Work Tasks
- Raise and harvest fish, shellfish, and other water or ocean animals, or plants
- Fill trays with eggs and take care of them until they hatch
- Watch young fish for disease and add medicine to water as needed
- Remove adult fish from ponds and set them free in rivers and lakes
- Work for government fish hatcheries or private fish farms in all parts of the country
- Work with all kinds of fish and shell fish, nets, lines and pots, water-testing equipment, and pump controls
Salary, Size & Growth
- $37,500 average per year ($18.00 per hour)
- A small occupation (7,500 workers in 2010)
- Expected to grow slowly (0.6% per year)
Education/Training
- Minimum for Entry: A 4-year degree in aquaculture
- Skills/Courses: Must know government rules, fish or shellfish care, and marketing.
- Certification/Licensing: Permits and licenses may be required for type of product produced.
