Work Tasks

• Help civil engineers to plan and build highways, bridges, dams, and other structures
• Help to draw the plans and maps for structures
• Estimate the costs and decide what materials to use in construction
• Check to see that the projects are being built correctly and according to codes
• Work indoors in offices and labs and outside at construction sites
• Work with surveying and mapping tools, charts, blueprints, calculators, cement, steel, concrete, and other building materials

• $49,500 average per year ($23.75 per hour)

Education/Training

• Minimum for Entry: A high school diploma and courses in engineering technology
• Employers Prefer: A 2-year degree in civil engineering technology
• Skills/Courses: Courses in algebra, trigonometry, science, and technology
• Certification/Licensing: Certification is available.
