Work Tasks
- Conduct energy audits of businesses and homes to see how well heating and cooling systems work
- Find problems and make suggestions about better energy systems
- Collect data to find out how utility costs can be kept down
- Work with engineers to improve energy in heating and cooling systems and appliances
- Work indoors and outside for power plants, factories, utility companies, construction companies, the government, and in homes
- Work with power plant tools and equipment, heating and air conditioning systems, electric and gas appliances, testing instruments, computers, and reports
Salary, Size & Growth
- $55,500 average per year ($26.75 per hour)

Education/Training
- Minimum for Entry: A high school diploma and courses in energy technology
- Employers Prefer: A 2-year degree in energy technology
- Skills/Courses: Knowledge of lighting, water, and electronics conservation; knowledge of energy sources and how to use them
- Certification/Licensing: Certification is available.
