Work Tasks

• Help farmers and homemakers with management problems
• Solve problems, teach people about new products, and how to use machines and equipment
• Help farmers with problems such as rotation of crops, what to feed farm animals, how to use new machines, etc.
• Help homemakers improve their home management and nutrition skills
• Work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture inside in meeting rooms, classrooms, and private homes, and outside helping farmers with special problems
• Work with farm equipment, livestock, plants, books, homemaking supplies, sewing equipment, cooking supplies, and newspaper articles

Salary, Size & Growth

• $52,000 average per year ($25.00 per hour)
• A small occupation (10,700 workers in 2010)
• Expected to grow slowly (0.1% per year)

Education/Training

• Minimum for Entry: A 4-year degree in agriculture, home economics, sociology, or a related field
• Employers Prefer: A master's or a Ph.D. degree in a specialized field
• Skills/Courses: Skills include administrative and leadership expertise.
