Work Tasks

• Draw clothing and accessory (belts, scarves, gloves, etc.) designs for the fashion industry
• Make clothing ads and paint or draw pictures for newspapers, magazines, TV, brochures, and catalogs
• Sketch fashions from mannequins, live models, and photographs
• Try to show clothes in a way that will make people want to buy them
• Work in art studios or their homes for advertisers, commercial art firms, publishers, manufacturers, department stores, and specialty clothing shops
• Use drawing boards, art paper, pencils, pens, photographs, models, mannequins, clothing samples, and computers

• $50,000 average per year ($24.00 per hour)

Education/Training

• Minimum for Entry: A 4-year degree in fine arts and a portfolio of the artist's best work
• Employers Prefer: A graduate degree in fine arts and a portfolio of the artist's best work
• Skills/Courses: College courses include computer design, fine arts, and fashion arts.
