Work Tasks
- Respond immediately to fire alarms and other calls for help
- Help protect people from fire, teach others how to prevent fires, look for fire hazards, and do fire drills
- Put out fires and make sure they are completely out
- May rescue victims and give them emergency treatment
- Work at the fire station and the scene of the emergency for city or volunteer fire departments, or private fire-fighting companies
- Work with firefighting equipment like fire trucks, ladders, hoses, and pumps; and first aid equipment, fire codes, and emergency rescue vehicles

- $65,000 average per year ($31.25 per hour)

Education/Training
- Minimum for Entry: Training in fire science either before or after being hired, 18 years of age or older, and a high school diploma
- Employers Prefer: A 2-year degree in fire science or an apprenticeship
- Skills/Courses: Skills in firefighting equipment and techniques, building construction, emergency medical technology, writing, public speaking, management and budgeting, and public relations
- Certification/Licensing: Passing physical and written tests may be required.
