Work Tasks
- Watch property to protect it against fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry
- Check doors and windows and make sure fire alarms and other systems are working correctly
- Screen passengers and goods being taken on air, sea, and rail terminals to make sure nothing illegal is taken on board
- Look at visitors and packages entering and leaving buildings, social events, and military bases
- Work for security firms, banks, management companies, hotels, hospitals, stores, casinos, museums, art galleries, colleges, the government, military bases, air, sea, and rail terminals, and other transportation facilities
- Work with electronic observation devices, watch clocks, two-way radios, flashlights, guns, parking permits, passes, and ID badges

- $32,500 average per year ($15.50 per hour)

Education/Training
- Minimum for Entry: On-the-job training
- Employers Prefer: A high school diploma and experience in the military police or law enforcement
- Skills/Courses: Training includes property rights, emergency procedures, and detention of suspected criminals. Armed guards are trained in weapon retention and laws covering the use of force.
- Certification/Licensing: Most states require a license. Must be 18 years of age or older, pass a background check, and complete training.
