Work Tasks

• Run the day-to-day operation of a hotel and try to make the most money they can for the hotel
• Set the rules for housekeeping and decide what foods to serve if there is a restaurant
• Train and oversee hotel workers, order food and hotel supplies, and make reports for hotel owners
• Take care of advertising the hotel for special events
• Work indoors in large and small hotels and motels all over the country
• Work with computers, personnel records, room rates, financial statements, purchasing orders, reservations, and room assignments

• $53,500 average per year ($25.75 per hour)
• A medium occupation (29,900 workers in 2010)
• Expected to grow slowly (0.5% per year)

Education/Training

• Minimum for Entry: A 2-year degree in hotel management or the equivalent
• Employers Prefer: A 4-year degree or higher in hospitality management
• Skills/Courses: College courses include hotel administration, accounting, economics, marketing, housekeeping, food service management, catering, hotel maintenance, computerized reservation systems, and business management.
• Certification/Licensing: Certification is available.
