Work Tasks
- Test and fix instruments, meters, gauges, scales, balances, compasses, barometers, etc.
- Look at diagrams, blueprints, and manuals to find the reason for the problem
- Take apart instruments, replace parts that are not working right, and put them back together
- Adjust instruments and make sure they are reading correctly
- Work inside for drug companies, utility companies, chemical plants, airlines, the government, and manufacturers of paper, metals, autos and missiles
- Work with instruments such as, meters, gauges, radiology and x-ray equipment; blueprints, hand tools, manuals, and computers

Education/Training
- Minimum for Entry: On-the-job training
- Employers Prefer: A 2-year degree or apprenticeship in instrumentation technology
- Skills/Courses: Courses in electronics, math, science, technical drawing, and technology
- Certification/Licensing: Union membership may be required.
