Work Tasks

• Help chefs and cooks in the kitchen
• Get cooking equipment out and measure food for recipes
• Clean, peel, and slice fruits and vegetables and make salads
• Set tables, clean cooking equipment and take out trash
• Work indoors in kitchens for restaurants, hotels, schools, government and factory cafeterias, grocery stores, private clubs, hospitals, and nursing homes
• Work with fruits, vegetables, meats, poultry, seafood, pots, pans, dishes, glasses, utensils, dishwashers, brooms, mops, and cleaning tools

Salary, Size & Growth

• $22,000 average per year ($10.50 per hour)
• A large occupation (506,000 workers in 2010)
• Expected to grow moderately (1.2% per year)

Education/Training

• Minimum for Entry: On-the-job training and a health certificate
• Employers Prefer: A high school diploma
• Certification/Licensing: Union membership may be required.
