- Write original music such as symphonies, operas, musicals, or popular songs
- Use knowledge of harmony, rhythm, melody, and other parts of musical theory to make the best sound possible
- Write music for special occasions, for advertisers, school groups, and movies
- May use computers to write and edit the music
- Work for themselves, or for radio, TV, and movie companies, schools, colleges, and churches
- Work with pianos, piano keyboards, musical instruments, music theory, computers, and recording equipment
