Work Tasks
- Run machines which shape metal, wood, plastic, and other materials
- Load materials into machines and set the controls
- May program machines using Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) programs
- Watch machines while they are running and check finished work
- Work inside plants for industries that make metal products, transportation equipment, industrial machinery and equipment, and plastic products
- Work with lathes, drill presses CNC machines, blueprints, layouts, instructions, measuring equipment, micrometers, coolants, lubricants, safety gear

- $36,500 average per year ($17.50 per hour)

Education/Training
- Minimum for Entry: On-the-job training
- Employers Prefer: A high school diploma and good communication and interpersonal skills
- Skills/Courses: Courses in applied math, blueprint reading, machine shop, and computers
- Certification/Licensing: Certification in machine operation and plastics production is available. Union membership may be required.
