Work Tasks
- Play musical instruments in an orchestra, band, rock group, or jazz combo
- Play for live audiences, on radio, in recording studios, and in TV and movie productions
- May play string, brass, woodwind, or percussion instruments
- Practice alone and with others to get ready for shows and concerts
- Work for recording companies, clubs, orchestras, theaters, radio and TV, movie industry, schools, colleges, the military, instrument makers, etc.
- Work with pianos, organs, guitars, violins, cellos, trumpets, flutes, oboes, drums, cymbals, synthesizers, sheet music, and other musical instruments

Education/Training
- Minimum for Entry: A 4-year degree in music, plus the ability to play an instrument with skill and professional expertise
- Employers Prefer: A master's or Ph.D. degree in music to teach music in colleges and universities
- Skills/Courses: Musicians must be skilled at the instrument they play, and usually begin study at an early age. College courses include musical theory, music interpretation, composition, conducting, and performance in their particular instrument.
