Work Tasks
- Make sure the nuclear reactor is working correctly and safely
- Run the reactor controls, read gauges, and maintain the correct conditions in the reactor core
- Test equipment in the plant to make sure it works correctly
- May do research to find new uses for nuclear power
- Work for electric utility companies, research labs, federal agencies such as the U.S. Department of Energy, and military services
- Work with hand and power tools, nuclear fuels, recording instruments, controls, control room equipment, and safety regulations

Education/Training
- Minimum for Entry: A high school diploma plus college courses in related subjects
- Employers Prefer: A 4-year degree in nuclear power technology or military training
- Skills/Courses: College courses in math, chemistry, physics, computers before hiring; courses in plant operation are provided after hiring
- Certification/Licensing: A license is required, after completing courses, on-the-job training, and passing a test. It must be renewed every 2 years.
