Work Tasks

• Build or repair boats, rafts, and pontoons
• Follow blueprints and make templates
• Cut and form parts and fasten timbers together
• Build and put in boat structures
• Work both indoors and outdoors for boat manufacturers and marinas
• Work with different kinds of wood, boats, life rafts, pontoons, hand tools, power tools, measuring instruments, blueprints, adhesives, and hardware

Education/Training

• Minimum for Entry: On-the-job training
• Employers Prefer: A high school diploma, 18 years of age or older, and an apprenticeship in boat building
• Skills/Courses: Courses in carpentry, shop, mechanical drawing, and applied math.
