Work Tasks
- Replace missing limbs or other body parts with prostheses (artificial limbs)
- Support weak muscles and joints with orthoses (support braces)
- Find out what the patient needs, design the device, take measurements, and select the materials and parts
- Make sure the device fits the patient and tell the patient how to use it
- Work for patient care facilities, orthopedic appliance firms, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and the government
- Work with prostheses (artificial limbs), orthoses (support braces), hand tools, and patient records

Education/Training
- Minimum for Entry: A 4-year degree and a minimum of one year of qualified experience
- Skills/Courses: College courses include biomechanics, gait analysis/pathomechanics, kinesiology, pathology, materials science, diagnostic imaging techniques, measurement, impression taking, model rectification, diagnostic fitting, postoperative management, and clinical experience.
- Certification/Licensing: Voluntary certification is available with a bachelor's degree and qualified experience.
