Work Tasks
- Manage rangelands to get the best use out of them without hurting the environment
- Help ranchers decide how many animals to have grazing on the land; prevent soil erosion and fires
- Take samples of water, soil, and plants and estimate the number of wildlife on the land
- Do office work, write reports, and manage public relations
- Work on rangelands and in offices for the government, coal and oil companies, banks, real estate firms, ranches, and environmental consultants
- Work with soil, water, vegetation, timber, lab testing equipment, reports, and other paperwork
Salary, Size & Growth
- $66,500 average per year ($32.00 per hour)
- A small occupation (18,900 workers in 2010)
- Expected to grow moderately (1.2% per year)
Education/Training
- Minimum for Entry: A 4-year degree in range management
- Employers Prefer: A master's or Ph.D. degree and experience
- Skills/Courses: College courses include forestry, hydrology, agronomy, recreation, wildlife ecology, watershed management, animal science, agricultural economics, and computer science.
- Certification/Licensing: Certifications are available.
