Work Tasks

• Apply make-up to performers and actors
• Read scripts and decide how make-up should look for a character
• Design special effects to make actors look the part
• Keep records of make-up at different stages in a production
• Work for movie and theater companies, and in all areas of the entertainment industry
• Work with make-up, actors, directors, and designers; wigs, scripts, and special effects

• $33,000 average per year ($15.75 per hour)

• Expected to grow moderately (1.7% per year)

Education/Training

• Minimum for Entry: On-the-job training
• Employers Prefer: A high school diploma and experience in applying theatrical makeup
• Skills/Courses: Courses in cosmetology and makeup art; knowledge of theatrical makeup design and application.
