Work Tasks
- Help farmers, ranchers, and others who are trying to conserve soil, water, and natural resources
- Try to get the best use out of land without damaging it
- Go to places where soil is wearing away and suggest ways for people to stop the erosion
- Watch weather conditions and tell people how to protect soil and water in dry seasons
- Work outside for the government, the forestry industry, consulting firms, farmers and ranchers, and as consultants
- Work with programs for land use, maps, and information about the weather
Salary, Size & Growth
- $61,500 average per year ($29.50 per hour)
- A small occupation (18,900 workers in 2010)
- Expected to grow moderately (1.2% per year)
Education/Training
- Minimum for Entry: A 4-year degree in agriculture
- Employers Prefer: A master's or Ph.D. degree and experience
- Skills/Courses: College courses include crop science, soil science, wildlife ecology, watershed management, agricultural economics, and computer science.
- Certification/Licensing: Certifications are available.
