Work Tasks
- Read scripts and talk to directors to find out where cameras and props will be
- Make sure they have the correct equipment so they will not get hurt
- Practice what they will do with others actors
- Do fighting or action scenes (like car chases) for movie, TV, or stage productions
- Work indoors and outdoors in movie, TV, or stage productions
- Work with scripts, costumes, make-up, props, stage sets, and safety equipment such as harnesses, rigging bars, and nets
Salary, Size & Growth
- $50,000 average per year ($24.00 per hour)
- A medium occupation (54,700 workers in 2010)
- Expected to grow moderately (1.3% per year)
Education/Training
- Minimum for Entry: Skills in one or more of the following: driving cars and motorcycles, horse riding, flying airplanes, gymnastics, martial arts, swimming and scuba diving, or snow skiing
- Employers Prefer: Performers who have worked as apprentices in the industry, or on a film set
- Skills/Courses: Skills include math and engineering. Experience in film and cinematography is helpful.
- Certification/Licensing: Membership in the Screen Actor's Guild is necessary for stunt performers.
