Work Tasks
- Make machine cutting tools and related dies, jigs, and fixtures
- Study blueprints, tool orders, and shop data to plan and make the tools
- Build and test experimental tools
- Use Computer-Aided Design (CAD) systems to produce designs
- Work for consulting and engineering firms, the government, and manufacturers of machinery, transportation equipment, aircraft parts, etc.
- Work with cutting tools, jigs, dies, fixtures, sketches, layouts, drafting equipment, computers, Computer-Aided Design systems, specifications, engineer's drawings, tool orders, and shop data

Education/Training
- Minimum for Entry: A 2-year degree in mechanical engineering technology plus experience in machining or tool making
- Employers Prefer: A 4-year degree in mechanical engineering and at least 2 years experience
- Skills/Courses: College courses include math, physics, shop, machine tool technology, and CAD.
- Certification/Licensing: US citizenship and a security clearance may be required.
