Work Tasks
- Help people who need it during a disaster
- Direct emergency workers and volunteers when there are hurricanes, floods, earthquakes and other disasters
- Give training courses in being prepared for a disaster
- Make sure disaster centers and equipment are ready
- Work for the government, schools, hospitals and others to decide what help is needed
- Work inside in an office developing disaster plans and outside at disaster sites checking shelters, directing response teams, and various other activities
Salary, Size & Growth
- $65,000 average per year ($31.25 per hour)
- A small occupation (11,800 workers in 2010)
- Expected to grow moderately (1.4% per year)
Education/Training
- Minimum for Entry: A 4-year degree plus several years of experience
- Employers Prefer: A master's degree in emergency management plus an internship and several years of experience
- Skills/Courses: The five stages of disaster management are prevention, preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery. Training is offered by the military and private relief agencies.
- Certification/Licensing: Certification is available.
