Work Tasks
- Remove solids, germs, and chemicals from water; test water samples
- Operate the treatment facility's pumps, pipes, valves, and other equipment by reading gauges
- Fix valves, pipes, and other equipment
- Use computers to monitor equipment, record testing results, and write reports
- Work indoors and outdoors for local government, water supply companies, chemical companies, and the military
- Work with meters, gauges, hand tools, lab testing equipment, valves, pumps, pipes, chlorine, other chemicals, and computers

Education/Training
- Minimum for Entry: A high school diploma and passing tests in math, mechanical aptitude, and intelligence
- Employers Prefer: A 2-year degree in water quality and wastewater treatment
- Skills/Courses: Courses in math, chemistry, biology, computers before hiring; courses in plant operation are provided after hiring.
- Certification/Licensing: A license is required. A variety of certifications are available.
