Work Tasks

• Install burglar alarms and other security systems
• Follow blueprints to put in wires, conduits, and signaling units
• Connect wires to circuit breakers, transformers, and batteries
• Test to make sure the system works correctly
• Work for security systems and alarm companies, construction companies, and as self-emplopyed in their own business
• Work with blueprints, hand tools, power tools, and testing equipment

• $45,000 average per year ($21.75 per hour)
• A medium occupation (57,400 workers in 2010)
• Expected to grow rapidly (2.5% per year)

Education/Training

• Minimum for Entry: On-the-job training
• Employers Prefer: A high school diploma and an apprenticeship in security system installation
• Skills/Courses: Courses in electronics, computer systems and networks, blueprint reading, shop math, and business practices.
