Work Tasks

• Manage the business affairs of professional athletes
• Try to get the best salary and benefits for athletes
• Choose exercises, rest periods, and diets for athletes
• May find advertisers for athletes to support
• Work for owners of professional sports teams, public and private school systems, colleges and universities
• Work with contracts, proposals, correspondence, financial statements, reports, schedules, and telephones

Salary, Size & Growth

• $57,500 average per year ($27.75 per hour)
• A small occupation (11,800 workers in 2010)
• Expected to grow rapidly (2.2% per year)

Education/Training

• Minimum for Entry: A 4-year degree
• Employers Prefer: A master's degree in sports administration, sports management, sports communication, or sports engineering, an internship, and work experience in a related field
• Skills/Courses: Competition is very stiff and experience in coaching at the high school or college level or as an assistant manager is very important.
