Work Tasks

• Feed animals and clean their barns, stables, and pens
• Plant and harvest crops
• Put hay into baling machines; stack bales of hay
• Clean and fix farm tools and machines and fix buildings and fences
• Work for dairy and poultry farms, cattle ranches, vegetable and crop farms, and fruit, nut, and citrus farms
• Work with fruits, vegetables, crops, farm animals, poultry, farm machines, milking machines, animal feed, trucks, sprays, and fertilizers

Salary, Size & Growth

• $25,500 average per year ($12.25 per hour)
• A large occupation (345,700 workers in 2010)
• Expected to grow moderately (0.7% per year)

Education/Training

• Minimum for Entry: On-the-job training
• Employers Prefer: Experience on a farm or operating machines.
