Work Tasks
- Install and repair systems that make electricity from sunlight
- Put panels on the roof and put in wires, pumps, valves, ducts, and storage tanks
- Follow blueprints to lay out and connect electrical wiring
- Test the system to make sure it works
- Work for solar energy companies, electrical and plumbing contractors, general contractors, builders, public utilities, the government, and themselves
- Work with specifications, blueprints, solar panels and systems, storage tanks, pumps, valves, pipes, ducts, power saws, drills, hand tools, wiring, controls, electrical circuits and components, and electrical test equipment
Salary, Size & Growth
- $44,500 average per year ($21.50 per hour)
- A large occupation (224,300 workers in 2010)

Education/Training
- Minimum for Entry: A high school diploma and on-the-job training
- Skills/Courses: Courses in electricity and woodworking; experience helping plumbers, electricians, roofers, or swimming pool/spa contractors
- Certification/Licensing: Union membership may be required.
