Avoid the Summer Slide with ACT Academy

We’ve all heard the statistics; students may experience up to 2 months of learning loss during the summer months. Summer learning programs are plentiful; however, those programs are often fee-based which can make it difficult for all students to access. Combat summer slide by utilizing ACT Academy, the free instructional tool for personalized learning.

ACT Academy experts hand-selected a collection of resources designed to help your students practice and polish on the subjects that matter most. Share this guide throughout your school and get a head start into the next year.

Have Your School's Voice Be Heard

The ACT National Curriculum Survey is a one-of-a-kind nationwide survey of educational practices and college and career readiness expectations conducted by ACT every few years. ACT surveys thousands of K–12 teachers and college instructors in English/writing, mathematics, reading, and science and a national cross-section of workforce supervisors and employees for the purpose of determining which skills and knowledge in these subjects are currently being taught at each grade level and which skills and knowledge are currently considered essential for college and career readiness.

ACT uses the results of the ACT National Curriculum Survey to guide the development of ACT assessment solutions, including the PreACT®, the ACT® test, ACT Aspire®, and ACT WorkKeys®.

How can students in elementary, middle, and high school engage in education and career navigation?

Best Practices

Engaging with English Learner Families

In the Palm Beach County School District there are 145 native languages and dialects spoken among the students. With strategies to communicate with both students and parents in place, the district is overcoming the challenges these underrepresented students face.

Every year, the Multicultural Department hosts six Family Engagement Nights across the district. These events provide parents with information about how to get their students through high school and achieve college and career success.

"I think it’s very important that we enlighten not only the students but the parents as well. We want to make sure that they understand that there are people in place to walk them through the entire process."

–Nadilia Charles, Specialist Instructional, Department of Multicultural Education

Beating the Odds Roadtrip

For underserved students and their communities, college and career navigation is a critical step toward future success. In summer 2017, three underserved students journeyed across the US and interviewed 16 inspiring professionals who overcame obstacles and achieved education and career success.

The 2017 Beating the Odds Roadtrip, conducted by Roadtrip Nation, was a real-world opportunity for these students to gain insights into how they can beat the odds and recognize that they, too, have the opportunity to achieve education and career success.

Beating the Odds Roadtrip: Report of Findings (PDF) — a new report from ACT and ACT’s Center for Equity in Learning – details the thematic qualitative analysis conducted with interview data from leaders and roadtrippers. This report:

  1. Draws attention to the conditions and obstacles that may influence the education and career trajectories of underserved youth
  2. Unpacks the factors and actions that support beating the odds and navigating education and career paths effectively
  3. Offers recommendations for stakeholders who can help young people achieve their education and career goals

See resources from the 2017 Beating the Odds Roadtrip. You can read the full report, watch the summary video, review our recommendations, and access the full length documentary.
