It’s Hispanic Heritage Month through October 15, and ACT’s Center for Equity in Learning (CEL) has teamed up with Univision to help Hispanic students overcome the challenges they face in achieving their college goals.
Roughly 18% of all US college students are Hispanic—one of the largest groups on campuses. ACT research has shown that many Hispanic students struggle to meet ACT College Readiness Benchmarks and face other barriers to educational attainment. CEL and Univision brought together focus groups of first-generation, college-bound students and their parents to get their views on making college and career aspirations a reality.
The resulting report, Breaking Down Barriers: Understanding Hispanic HIgh School Students’ Perceptions on the Transition to College determines three ways in which policymakers and stakeholders can improve conditions for college-bound Hispanic students:
- More opportunities for students to learn about transitioning to college
- Parent inclusion in the college application process
- More resources for first-generation or minority students’ success
“This research should be a wake-up call to education leaders and the country as a whole,” says Jim Larimore, chief officer for CEL. “The Hispanic population is growing rapidly in the US, and we think it’s essential to ask parents and students about their experiences, listen to their insights and then examine what we can all do to improve outcomes. We’re glad to have Univision, a trusted leader in communications, and a key resource to the Hispanic population, as a partner in this effort.”
The “X Factors” of College Readiness
High school coursework and good grades play a significant role in student readiness for college, but they certainly aren’t the only factors. Other student and school characteristics can affect preparedness, including:
- Parent involvement
- Student motivation and goals
- Social engagement
- Perceptions of education
- Economic and cultural makeup of student body
- Social and emotional learning (SEL)

ACT CEO on #WhyApply Day and 60 Years of Inclusivity
Approximately 8,000 students held college application events on September 20 for #WhyApply Day, hosted by the American College Application Campaign and designed to increase college-going rates among high school graduates. ACT CEO Marten Roorda says the #WhyApply philosophy has been a part of ACT even before hashtags were used, following the inspiration of ACT founder E.F. Lindquist.
“More than six decades later, Lindquist’s insistence on inclusiveness—capturing the unique qualities of each student—continues to drive our work,” Roorda saya. “That’s why we’re proud to support ACT’s American College Application Campaign and its efforts to provide all students the opportunity to apply to college.”
How Research Evolves to Solve Educational Issues
All ACT tools and services are informed by decades of research in educational and workforce development. ACT’s research serves an integral role in ensuring that ACT products and services are reliable, valid, efficacious, and fair, while providing thought leadership on educational issues and trends to customers and advocates.
ACT research has evolved over time to identify trends and uncover solutions to the most pressing educational issues of the day, as well as to support ACT’s evolving vision and strategy. However, the essential function of ACT research remains the same—ensuring that ACT provides high-quality educational and workforce solutions grounded in research.
Fee Waivers and Supports for At-Risk Students
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the immediate college enrollment rate for high school completers from high-income families is at a rate nearly 16 percentage points higher than for students from low-income families. These students are getting an earlier start on postsecondary education and training that provides access to more secure and better-paying jobs.
That’s why ACT has introduced new programs and resources for students who may be struggling to meet the cost of their educational pursuits and, more recently, introduced free, personalized learning tools to help students master what they need to know to be successful in college and career.

There is still time for your students to register for the upcoming ACT! October is one of the best times for your students to test, here’s why:
- Sophomores and juniors can use the exam to predict college and career readiness
- Seniors have a final shot at securing the score they need before college applications are due.
The final deadline to register is Tuesday, October 8!
Dual Enrollment FAQs
Dual enrollment programs can help students save time and money, understand the expectations of college-level courses earlier, and explore interests before choosing a major. In addition, ACT research found that students entering college with dual credit are generally more likely to complete a bachelor’s degree faster than those who do not.
