Work Tasks

BANK TELLERS handle a wide range of banking transactions, such as cashing checks, accepting deposits and loan payments, and processing withdrawals from checking and savings accounts. Tellers sell savings bonds, travelers' checks, and certificates of deposit. They take payments for utility bills and charge cards. Being a bank teller requires a lot of attention to detail. Tellers must verify checking information and make sure that written and numerical amounts agree. Bank tellers use computers to get quick access to detailed information on customer accounts and to record deposits and withdrawals.

Entry Requirements

BANK TELLERS are required to have at least a high school education. Banks prefer applicants who have had high school courses in mathematics, accounting, bookkeeping, economics, and public speaking. New tellers have both classroom training at the bank, and on-the-job training. Workers with bachelor's degrees are likely to start at higher salaries and advance more easily. Bank tellers need no special licensing or certification, but tellers can prepare for better jobs by taking courses offered or accredited by the American Institute of Banking.
