Work Tasks

SOLAR ENERGY SYSTEM INSTALLERS install and repair solar energy systems designed to convert radiant sunlight directly into electricity (photovoltaic systems); or to collect, store, and circulate solar heated water (solar thermal) for residential, commercial, or industrial use. Solar energy system installers mount pre-assembled solar panels or systems, and install storage tanks, pipes, pumps, valves, and ducts. They connect electrical wiring according to wiring diagrams. They activate the entire installation and observe the whole system to detect any malfunctions.

Entry Requirements

Most SOLAR ENERGY SYSTEM INSTALLERS are trained on the job by experienced installers. Some manufacturers sponsor training sessions on their products. High school graduation or equivalent is usually required. High school shop courses in electricity and woodworking are helpful. Summer jobs as helpers to plumbers, electricians, roofers, or swimming pool/spa contractors are also an asset. Solar energy system installers may belong to the plumbers and pipe fitters, electrical, or sheet metal workers' local unions.
